The STRG Internship Experience

It’s been a while since we reported on our internship program (Why a Software Engineer Internship at Strg. Is the Best Decision I Ever Made). Here at STRG, nurturing the next generation of tech visionaries isn’t just a part of our mission; it’s the heartbeat of our organization. We recognize the profound impact internships can have on young, talented minds, and it’s a belief that runs deep within our DNA. That’s why we’ve made it a cornerstone of our commitment to empower aspiring software developers.

As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering young talented minds and empowering them to explore opportunities in software development, we offer internships in different departments. Whether it’s a voluntary exploration of interests or a “mandatory” assignment by uni, we’re here, offering a 360° cycle of opportunities. So, this summer the honor extended to welcoming two interns and guiding them through a workflow that would forever change their perspective on technology, innovation, and career opportunities, but also speaks volumes to the power of mentorship.

We sat down with our dear Interns, Philipp Ladich & Felix Schöller to find out what they enjoyed most about their time here, and what they would recommend to future interns. Enjoy the read!

When did you complete your internship at STRG, and what was your role?

Philipp: In July 2023, I had the opportunity to complete my internship at STRG. I worked as part of the Data Science and Research Team. In my role as Data Scientist, I was part of team Neo, which focuses on some really cool projects in the AI & ML sphere. Pretty exciting stuff, I have to say!
Felix: I also had the pleasure of being in Team Neo this summer. My internship was throughout August and my role was related to frontend development.

Could you describe the main tasks and responsibilities you had during your internship?

F: I worked on the AGENTS project that was in his final research phase. Part of my role was to write unit tests and help with the update from Nuxt 2 to 3. It is an open-source framework that helps you create specific web applications. This specific task alone was quite interesting for me because I want to focus on web development.
P: My work primarily involved researching and testing various Large Language Models (LLMs) and their frameworks, but also exploring new technologies in the field of Machine Learning. All of this was carefully planned and discussed in advance, to familiarize me with ongoing topics and trends and assess their potential value for future projects.

What were your impressions of working at STRG, especially from a work perspective?

P: From a work perspective, I found it incredibly exciting to explore and present new technologies to the team. Working in Team Neo, I felt quickly integrated and appreciated. Progress was not only acknowledged but truly valued. Overall, it was a dynamic and engaging work environment!
F: I can only agree with Philipp! This was my second internship with STRG and both times it was a fun and incredibly educational experience.

How did your internship at STRG contribute to your personal and professional growth?

F: Both internships at STRG helped me dive into specific areas of software development. During my first time around, I was working on several debugging issues. With my last internship, I wanted to focus more on component development. Throughout the project, it was clear to me that I wanted to pursue a career as a developer. The internships at STRG definitely helped shape my career path!
P: I got the opportunity to explore my dream role in the tech industry. Having spent time with senior fellow Data Scientists, the entire experience was weighted differently, as it provided me with valuable insights into the field of Research and Data Science. I gained a wealth of new knowledge and skills, which I believe will be instrumental in my future endeavors. It was a transformative experience, both personally and professionally.

Do you have any recommendations or tips for future interns considering an internship at STRG?

P: Absolutely, I highly recommend exploring your interests and applying to individual internships across different departments. Especially while studying at University or on summer breaks, like my internship at STRG. It helps you better understand your interests and discover where your talents lie. Thinking about my time at STRG, I praise the relaxed atmosphere and structured work! Having a “buddy” who is always available for questions and guidance is a concept I strongly support, especially for interns. It eases the transition into the company and ensures you have the support you need.
F: If you are interested in web development, and want to further develop your skills in this area, the internship at STRG is something that I highly recommend. Also, if you have a basic understanding of Git, the Netshell, and JavaSCript, then this is the perfect place to dive deeper. You can work your way through different areas of interest and have more than one internship, like I did. A good working environment and relaxed atmosphere round up the experience and make it easy to stay in touch!

The combination of fun and passion is the driving force behind a successful developer. It unleashes creativity and success!

What motivated you to choose STRG for your internship, and how has your experience aligned with your expectations?

F: For me, it was a no-brainer. I stayed in touch with the team after my last internship, and we talked about future possibilities for another one. I continued my studies and as soon as I had a specific area of interest in mind, I contacted the Team and applied for the summer internship. My expectations were met to the fullest, both times around. Michael Dosser, the COO & my project mentor, made sure that we aligned on every task and helped me get the most out of the practical experience!
P: I was drawn to STRG because of its reputation in the field of Data Science and its commitment to innovation. The CEO, Jürgen Schmidt, and my Mentor, Lead Data Scientist, Dadhichi Shukla, are working closely with plenty of Austrian universities. And many professors are willing to hand out recommendations. So, it’s a huge mutual benefit and a great way of finding and connecting employees & employers. In my case, it was a summer internship, but nevertheless, my experience at STRG was super insightful. Nowadays it’s difficult to get hands-on experience right away, or a direct opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies, which was exactly what I was looking for in an internship. Getting access to these things and being part of a project, was a super big step for me.

Lastly, thank you for taking the time for this interview and for being a part of the team. It was a pleasure working with you!

P: Thank you, too, and the entire team for having me. It was an amazing experience!
F: Thanks for having us! It was a great experience and very helpful for my future career in the field.
